Overview

Has it been a while since you were in a classroom? Are you ready to tackle a science class, but feel you would do better with an intro class under your belt before you get there? Our educational providers offer a variety of online courses to help you gain the skills and confidence you want, so you can continue on with more demanding coursework later.

PLEASE NOTE: BHMT will use your available KP tuition reimbursement funds for eligible tuition, fees and materials expenses. If available tuition reimbursement funds are not sufficient to cover expenses, BHMT will cover the remainder at no cost to you.

How many hours a week should I expect to spend “in class”?

You are expected to spend 1-2 hours per day over a 5½ week period. You will be expected to participate in discussions with your instructor and fellow students about project phases and tasks topics. Discussion board topics are tied to specific tasks for each week. Please note: Discussion posts are graded. You will have 2 hours or real-time chat each week. Real-time chats focus on the course topic for each week of the 5 week session and re archived, so you can review the discussion on our own schedule.

What support services are available to students?

Services include unlimited tutoring, learning labs, advising and technical support. Technical support is available 24/7.

What kind of computer skills do I need to be successful?

You need Internet access (preferably high speed) with a common Internet browser such as Internet Explorer. We suggest a skill level of an advanced beginner, so you are able navigate through web browsers and operate basic functions such as copy, paste and save documents. CTU has a learning tool – M.U.S.E. – which can adjust to your own learning style.

What if I need to cancel or drop out? What happens to my Tuition Reimbursement account?

Withdraws will be handled by CTU representatives. Please contact the Student Advisor (1-855-283-1590, BHMT@coloradotech.edu) or you can contact the student advisor assigned to you. You have until the end of week one (by Saturday) to cancel or drop the course. If you find your circumstances prevent you from remaining in the course, you will need to let the instructor and Trust know. Your tuition reimbursement will not be charged, however failure to communicate may result in you not being able to participate in any trust-sponsored program for a period of twelve months.

What are my responsibilities?

Please sign up only if you are committed to completing the class. Completion is of high importance! Grades are given. You must receive a C or better to be eligible for most regional tuition reimbursement programs.

What happens after I complete a class?

CTU will send your final grade to the Trust so your Tuition Reimbursement account can be charge appropriately.

Is this course only for BHMT participants in the California region?

This course provided by California State University San Marcos Extended Learning is open to all regions.

What healthcare academic programs may require this course?

Nursing and Allied Health programs may require this prerequisite course. Allied Health professions encompass a wide range of occupations that support healthcare. Allied Heath career paths that may require this course include, Medical Lab Technologist, Clinical Lab Scientist, Kinesiology, Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy. It is your responsibility to check with the school and academic program you intend to pursue to determine whether this course is required.

How do I learn the course lecture material without online live lectures?

The instructor has defined the course material you will need to learn for each topic. You will have required reading and access to recorded lectures. There are online study tools to read, view, listen to, and interact with to help you learn the content. The instructor is also available to assist you.

How do I know if I am enrolled?

You will receive a confirmation email from CSUSM welcoming you to the course and providing you with further instruction of how to log on and review the course orientation.

What is the best way to interact with the instructor?

You can reach the instructor by email and/or phone. Instructor contact information will be provided to students.

How will I get oriented to the course technology?

The Practice Course is provided to help you navigate CSUSM online platform. There are also student resources available on CSUSM online platform that will provide instructions on how to contact CSUSM tech support.

What happens if I need to drop out of the course?

If you do not drop the course within the first 2 weeks from the start of class, your Trust account will be suspended for 1 year. If you need assistance, contact your instructor and BHMT Career Development Coach. If you find that your circumstances prevent you from remaining in the course, you will need to let the instructor and Trust know.

Are there any prerequisites?

No, this course is primarily for those who would either like a refresher on computer literacy or would like to learn how to succeed an online class if they have never taken one

How many hours per week should I expect to spend?

Up to 8 hours, this course is self-led

What happens if I do not complete?

You may be able to pick up where you left off, but we recommend you completing it when you start it so the info stays fresh, it takes about 6 weeks to complete

Will I receive a certificate at the end?

Yes, you will receive a completion certificate

Are there any out of pocket costs?

No, this is paid for by the trust

Can I use my Education Leave?

Talk with your department manager and union steward about how you can best use your Education Leave.

What happens if I have exhausted my tuition reimbursement benefits? Would I still be eligible to take this course?

The Trust will recover tuition reimbursement eligible expenses to the maximum available. Should an individual not have sufficient funds to cover the expenses or should the classes exceed the regional maximum, the Trust will bear the expense.

Eligibility Requirements:

You must be a KP Union Alliance or Coalition Employee with “active” KP employment status.
You must have completed your probationary period.
You must be a BHMT eligible part-time or full-time KP benefited employee.

Unsuccessful Course Completion and Dropped Class Policy
Ben U programs require your time and effort on a consistent basis as well as communicating if you are having difficulty or a conflict in time. Should you not complete your program successfully with a ‘C’ or better, or drop the course by the institution’s first drop date, you will not be able to participate in any Trust program for a period of twelve months.
