Formal and Informal Interviews

Selected job candidates will participate in interviews if applying for non-union positions or union positions in which seniority is not the deciding factor.

TIPS

For union positions based on seniority, formal interviews are not a part of the hiring process. However, there sometimes is an informal meeting (“meet and greet”) during which the manager and job candidate discuss the position under consideration.
Exception: If a union position has been posted externally (after the 7-day internal bidding period), and the seniority requirements no longer apply, selected qualified candidates (union and non-union employees) will go through an interview process.

Prepare in advance for your interview

TIPS

The most successful interviews are a conversation between you and the interviewer. Prepare questions to ask during the interview to gain information.
Research the department, the position, and the interviewer to be prepared for the conversation.
Be ready to match your experience and strengths with those needed for the position.
Think about several stories to use as examples when you talk about your strengths. Use the “STAR” method (Situation-Task-Action-Results) to develop compelling stories which illustrate your skills and experience.
Prepare answers for questions often asked in interviews and PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!

Conduct yourself professionally during your in-person or virtual interview.

TIPS

Whether virtual or in-person, be ready for your interview 10-15 minutes early and dress appropriately.
Be aware of your non-verbal communication such as your body language, voice tone, and energy level.
Talk about how your strengths demonstrate your motivation and ability to do the job.
Show interest in the position by asking relevant questions.
At the end of the interview, inquire about next steps and when they expect to fill the position.

Follow-up with a thank-you note and stay connected after the interview.

TIPS

A personalized thank-you email (or written note) can positively influence the interviewer’s perception of you as a fit for the position.
Decide whether this position meets your interests and expectations.
If you have not received a response within two weeks, follow up with the interviewer unless you have been informed the decision will take longer.
