Terminology and Advanced Skills

This eight-hour course will examine how the profession of healthcare interpreting has developed over time and will also define the roles and responsibilities of the medical interpreter as they exist today, including a review of the Medical Interpreter Code of Ethics to enable interpreters to perform their duties with the highest professional integrity. In addition, basic interpreting skills will be identified, and participants will have the opportunity to put them into practice through specially designed exercises.

  • Background of the Profession
  • Legislative Updates
  • Role of the Interpreter

This 16-hour course recognizes that the United States’ healthcare system can be like a “foreign culture” unto itself, even for those who have lived their entire life in this country. This course will first examine the biomedical culture and the roles of the three potential players within this cultural environment: the patient, the provider and the interpreter. The particular characteristics of various healthcare settings will also be examined, as well as specialized terminology and procedures utilized within different medical professions and specialties. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of culture and its impact on healthcare, and will have the opportunity to put that terminology to use in role-play scenarios typical of medical settings.

Topics include:

  • Cultural Competence
  • U.S. Biomedical Culture
  • Healthcare Setting (including office visits, mental health, emergency and trauma, hospice, clinics and medical insurance)
  • Medical Professions (including ObGyn, genetics, pediatrics, nutrition, counseling, oncology, surgery, orthopedics, radiology, physical therapy, chiropractic care, urology, neurology, allergies, asthma, respiratory illnesses)
  • Basic Consecutive Interpreting Skills
  • Techniques and Strategies of Note-Taking
  • Memory Development

This 16-hour course will review the medical terminology most often needed by medical interpreters, as well as more advanced terminology and a review of complex procedures. Discussion and practice will be an integral part of each area covered, as participants are presented with the opportunity to hone their skills and further develop their industry-specific knowledge. More challenging aspects of the profession will also be explored to provide the participants with experience in dealing with real-life situations that can present obstacles to a successful interpreting encounter. The course will also include additional resources that are available to the professional interpreter.

Topics include:

  • Anatomy and Systems
  • Medical Apparatus
  • Routine Tests
  • Diagnostic Procedures
  • Medications

  • Advanced Terminology
  • False Cognates

Please note: Certification of Completion (COC) will only be given if the participant completes only module one or all three modules. If a participant takes only module two they will not receive a COC. To receive the 10 CEPs, participants must complete all three modules.
