Explore: Educate yourself about KP careers that would provide greater job satisfaction.

Tips

  • Complete assessments with your career development coach to identify interests, values, skills
    and your ideal work environment
  • Identify potential job areas and conduct informational interviews to clarify your direction
  • Visit professional association websites and other online resources to learn about areas of interest
  • Ask trusted colleagues what key talents you bring to the workplace
  • Ask trusted colleagues what roles within KP would be a good fit for you
  • Explore education and/or training that supports your interests and goals

Transfer: A change in position–not necessarily in level of responsibility, status or pay.

Tips:

  • Investigate related positions within your union
  • Research related positions outside your union
  • Identify your transferrable skills
  • Volunteer on cross-departmental or cross-functional committees
  • Pursue training that expands or stretches your options
  • Keep your KP profile and resume updated

Realign: Move to a position that aligns with lifestyle needs or supports a new career direction.

  • Complete assessments with your career development coach to identify interests, values, skills
    and your ideal work environment
  • Find similar job titles in other departments; explore their career pathways
  • Conduct informational interviews in other departments
  • Volunteer on cross-departmental or cross-functional committees
  • Take an online class in the new functional area you are considering

Move Up: A change in position that brings more responsibility, status and/or money.

Tips:

  • Define your track: individual contributor or manager
  • Discuss with your manager opportunities to enrich your skills
  • Become your department’s go-to or expert on a specific topic or procedure
  • Seek out mentors who inspire your growth and development
  • Join your UBT, other committees, or a professional association and assume lead roles
  • Conduct informational meetings with key contacts

Relocate: Move to a new region, city or facility where your career goal can be met.

  • Research related departments in other regions
