Introduction to Human Anatomy & Physiology I with Lab

The first in a two-course series designed to introduce the principles of human anatomy and physiology for students in health and human services, including Nursing. Taught from a systems perspective where students will learn basic physiological principles and mechanisms along with their associated anatomical basis. Material includes anatomical terminology, cell and tissue structure and function, basic biochemical and metabolic pathways and the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, digestive and excretory systems.

Credits: 4 semester units (3 Lecture/1 Lab)
Course capacity: 30 students
Course length: 16 weeks

Course cost: The costs of the course and lab kit are handled by BHMT. Any replacement lab kits should be coordinated with the school and are at your own expense (estimated cost $538). The electronic textbook is provided as part of the course cost. A hardcopy textbook is available for purchase at your own expense (estimated cost $190). You are also responsible for the digital video camera equipment needed for this course (estimated cost $50+). Note: The instructor recommends Logitech QuickCam 500 or QuickCam Communicate MP available at many computer stores or online.

Transferability Requirement

BHMT participants are responsible for making sure selected course(s) will transfer to the accepting institution.

WARNING: If this is your first online course or you are recently returning to school BHMT highly recommend you take a college preparatory course Intro to Anatomy & Physiology or UNIV 104 – College Gateway Program before registering for a course with lab. If you are already enrolled in a Lab Science class, you will not be able to enroll in additional Lab Science courses.
PLEASE NOTE: BHMT will use your available KP tuition reimbursement funds for eligible tuition, fees and materials expenses. If available tuition reimbursement funds are not sufficient to cover expenses, BHMT will cover the remainder at no cost to you.

Are there any prerequisites required for A&P with Lab I?

There are no prerequisites required. The instructor has indicated that it is helpful for you to have some previous coursework in science or medical terminology, e.g. biology, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, or any science course. You will not be disqualified from consideration for the course if this is not in your background.

CAN I TAKE MORE THAN ONE CLASS AT A TIME?

No, if you are already enrolled in a Lab Science class, you will not be able to enroll in additional Lab Science courses.

How many hours a week should I expect to spend on studying and lab work?

In general, you should expect to spend 18-20 hours a week or more depending on the individual student.

How should I handle and store the animal specimens?

Animal specimens should be stored in a cool place in the plastic container in which they arrive (NOT in your refrigerator). DO NOT open the animals until the week of the assignment. Dissection can be done on any flat surface using the equipment provided in the lab kit. Conducting your dissection properly by following directions and safety protocol is required. Hands on Lab provides student customer service should you have questions about your lab kit. WARNING: The cat is preserved in formaldehyde

What should I do with my lab kit if I plan on taking A & P II?

If you are planning to take A & P II, do not discard your lab kit. The trust will not pay for another lab kit or any replacement items.

What else is important to know that will help me succeed?

Concepts build on one another, so it’s critical that you do not fall behind! It’s important to ask for help immediately to address any technical issues or course content and assignment problems. Learning chemistry concepts and elements requires constant repetition. Develop a schedule for study and lab work, so that you can learn the material and complete assignments on time. It is important that you understand all biology concepts just as if you were in a face-to-face class

What happens if I need to drop out of the course

If you do not drop the course within the first 2 weeks from the start of class and return your lab kit and microscope in the provided return label your trust account will be suspended for 1 year. If you need assistance contact your instructor and BHMT Career Development Coach. If you find that your circumstances prevent you from remaining in the course, you will need to let the instructor and Trust know

You must have completed your probationary period.
You must be a BHMT eligible part-time or full-time KP benefited employee.

A&P I Practice Course (Highly Recommend)

This self-paced online practice course consists of sample course navigation tasks and quiz. Your results help you and the schools assess your readiness to complete a rigorous 16-week online science lab course that carries academic credit.

Practice Course: Open
Estimated time to complete: 1-3 hours you can bookmark your place and return at your own pace. You will need a digital camera or cell phone camera to complete some practice exercises.
Instructions for taking the A&P I Practice Course:
1. Visit the CSUSM Community website.
2. Click on ‘Create new account’.
3. Fill out the New Account form with your details.
4. An email will be immediately sent to your email address.
5. Read your email, and click on the web link it contains.
6. Your account will be confirmed and you will be logged in.
7. In the search bar, located at the bottom of the page, type in ‘BHMT’.
8. Click on ‘Go’.
9. Click on “CSUSM Online Classroom Practice Course for BHMT“.
10. Click on ‘Enroll me’.
11. You have been successfully enrolled in the Practice Course.
