Get advanced medical interpreting training

The Advanced Medical Training Program helps you strengthen your interpreting skills, prepare for the QBS II test, or refresh your knowledge. It’s available online or over the phone, with 40 hours of flexible, self-paced training.

How it works

You’ll complete three modules online or by phone with support from an instructor. Each module includes interactive lessons and practical exercises.

  • Module 1: Professional Skills & Ethics (8 hours): You’ll learn about the history and role of medical interpreters, responsibilities, Code of Ethics and basic skills
  • Module 2: Working in the Healthcare System (16 hours): You’ll learn about U.S. healthcare systems and terminology, cultural competence, biomedical culture, medical settings, specialties and study skills.
  • Module 3: Terminology & Advanced Skills (16 hours): You’ll learn medical terminology, diagnostic tools, medications and linguistic challenges such as sight translation and interpreting real-world documents.

Certificates and credit

  • You can complete Module 1 alone or all three modules to receive a Certificate of Completion (COC)
  • To earn 10 Continuing Education Points (CEPs), you must complete all three modules and submit a request to lla@languageline.com

NOTE: Module 2 alone does not qualify for a certificate.

To have access to these modules, you must:

  • Be a KP Union Alliance or Coalition employee
  • Be a BHMT-eligible employee
  • Have completed your probationary period
  • A reliable computer with a high-speed internet connection
  • Current browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Edge

A microphone may be needed for some activities

Ask about BHMT’s Laptop Lending Program if you need a computer for your classes.

  1. Select the Register button.
  2. Enter your NUID to confirm your eligibility.
  3. Read and approve the BHMT Beneficiary Agreement.
  4. Fill out and submit the application.
  5. You’ll receive an email from LanguageLine Solutions within 24 business hours with instructions.
