Fine Tune
Your Resume

Build a resume that gets results

Your resume is more than just a job list. It’s a first impression and a key factor in determining whether you are invited to a job interview.

In a competitive job market, recruiters and hiring managers often review several applications for the same position. To stand out, create a winning resume that boldly highlights your achievements, skills and impact—and proves that you’re the right fit for the job you want.

BHMT is here to help you craft a resume that gets noticed. Take advantage of our resources, workshops, and career development coaching appointments to fine-tune your resume, build your personal brand, and prepare for your next career move.

Here are some tips to help you create a successful resume:

Tailor your resume to the job

  • Create a special resume for each job you apply for
  • Use words from the job posting to show you’re a good fit
  • Show why your skills, school, and work experience match the job

Show your impact using the STAR method

Don’t just list your work history on your resume. Ask yourself How did I make a difference and How did I add value?

Use the STAR method to show your achievements, accomplishments and measurable impact:

  • Situation: What was the problem or need?
  • Task: What goal or responsibility did you have?
  • Action: What specific steps did you take?
  • Result: What was the positive outcome of your actions?

Example: Improved clinic scheduling (Situation) by designing a new workflow (Task) and training the team (Action), which cut patient wait times by 20% and raised satisfaction scores (Result).

Readable resumes win interviews

  • Use a clean, modern design with plenty of white space so it can be read on a mobile device
  • Avoid graphics, photos and fancy fonts.
  • Keep bullets short. Lead your sentences with strong action verbs.

Show results with numbers

  • Use numbers and percentages to show impact. For example, “reduced wait times by 20%”
  • Pair each job responsibility with a measurable result when you can

Your resume should look neat and be easy to read. A clean, simple format helps employers quickly see your skills and experience.

  • Choose one simple font like Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman or Helvetica
  • Keep font sizes and spacing consistent
  • Use common headings: Summary, Skills, Experience and Education.
  • Determine the appropriate length: A one-page resume is fine if you don’t have much work experience. You can use two pages if more experience adds value.
  • Use a common file type: Upload your resume in .docx format for online applications unless a PDF is requested.
  • Name your resume file clearly: For example, Jane Doe Resume.

Review your resume

It’s easy to miss your own mistakes. Ask a trusted friend, coworker, or career coach to look over your resume and give you helpful feedback.

  • Run a spelling and grammar check. Read your resume out loud to catch any errors.
  • Ask a colleague or coach to read through your resume. A second opinion always helps.
  • Protect your privacy. Don’t include any sensitive information. Fact-check your resume and write it in your own voice.
