Perform, Grow, Lead – KP has a strategic plan. What’s yours?

You got yourself to where you are now. You see yourself doing what you’re doing for a long time to come. That doesn’t mean you have to stop learning, growing and taking on new adventures! Take this opportunity to determine what personal achievement, well-being, work-life balance and life-long learning really look like to you.


And if/when you do find yourself ready for a bigger fish bowl – enlist your BHMT Career Development Coach to help you explore career mobility opportunities or to take another trip around the career development wheel.

STEP 1: Know Yourself and Your Job Duties

Start the career management journey with what you’re in complete control of – yourself! The BHMT Career Wheel will provide all the resources you need. Take a moment and get re-acquainted with yourself. For example, you can utilize the Assessment phase of the career wheel to reflect back on your life/career experiences thus far. What truly motivates you? Do you have all the skills you need right now to perform at the top of scope in your current position? In what areas of your job have you gained such a depth of experience that it would be a shame NOT to share your success with other KP employees?

STEP 2: Know Your Department Goals and Needs

What are my department goals? How do they intersect with my skills and experience? How can I use my skills and experience to help my department and KP achieve its goals for today and the future?


  • Guide to KP Behaviors: This guide will familiarize you with the behaviors most valued by and effective within Kaiser Permanente. Pay special attention to the Behaviors and KP Value Compass on page 5 of the guide.
  • KP Core Behaviors Assessment: You can use this assessment to help you determine where your strengths and areas of development are among the most valued KP behaviors.
  • Action Plan Template for Year One: Especially valuable for new employees, but also relevant for long-term employees, this worksheet will help you gather information on yourself and on your department for the purpose of planning actions to solve problems and build relationships.
  • Action Plan for Quarter One:Whether you are a new employee or a long-term employee well established in a position, this worksheet can help you take a quarterly view of the opportunities for problem-solving and relationship building.

STEP 3: Identify Goals to Work On

Given everything you’ve learned about yourself and your work environment, what direction best reflects your interests, passions, values, and skills?
How do you narrow all the options and focus your energy on just a couple of things at a time? What comes first? What comes next as you pursue your vision? The BHMT goal-setting phase on the Career Wheel can help you answer these questions.


STEP 4: Vision Becomes a Reality — Make a Plan

How do you couple your vision with the needs of your employer so you can thrive in your work environment? Set yourself up for success! Create a plan that moves you from where you are right now to where you want to be.

STEP 5: Engage Your Network and Carve Out Time

Career management doesn’t just happen – you need to make space for it and nurture your growth. Put in extra time on these tasks whenever possible and enlist the help of those who have walked the path before you. This includes reaching out to others who can offer assistance or expertise, taking on activities that will help you stretch, and cultivating your network. You may well have used the following tools during the Job Search phase. Career management is a great time to return to and either leverage work previously done or use the tools anew.


STEP 6: Engage Your Manager

If you want to really move forward in your career, your manager can be your biggest asset and greatest champion. Make sure to add him/her to your Career Development team as well. Adding your manager to your team can help keep you on track and add accountability as you take charge of growing your career.


STEP 7: Pair Your Plan with Education

Continuous learning is essential to helping you move toward your career goals and adapt to the changing needs within your department and KP. There are numerous resources to keep you learning and growing. You should utilize all the resources available to successfully achieve your vision, deliver on your goals, and take yourself to the next level. This is a great opportunity to circle back to the Education and Training phase or to consider it from a fresh perspective. BHMT education and training resources include:


STEP 8: Grow to Meet Your Full Potential

You can continue growing by managing your career. A good way to do this is to create your own career management team, formally or informally, to provide expertise, inspiration, and accountability. These teams might consist of peers, managers, UBT members, your BHMT Career Development Coach, family members, professional associations and more.
